'Ex' hires bungler to kill man's wife
A WALLET left on a balcony led to a would-be hired killer, also to an intertwined extramarital affair, police said.
Two people, a man and a woman, have been arrested and will be charged under homicide laws, said prosecutors in Jiading District.
Eight years ago, the woman, Tang Feng, met Guo Deming, a middle-aged man with a family, prosecutors said. They started an affair that lasted until this February, when Tang got pregnant.
Guo, 52, a local businessman who now has a grandchild, told his wife of the affair and offered 500,000 yuan (US$78,745) for the abortion and to pay off Tang.
Tang, who agreed to the abortion, told police she became angry and disappointed since Guo has never went to see her after that. The anger shifted to Guo's wife, and Tang advertised online that she was willing to hire some to kill the woman, police said.
A man in central China, Huang Xiaojun, saw the post and contacted Tang in May, police said. Huang, 27, said he was unemployed and needed the money, 120,000 yuan, offered by Tang.
Huang came to Shanghai and brought another young man, who called himself a "killer," with him, prosecutors said. Tang made a down payment of 70,000 yuan but Huang's companion fled with the money, according to police.
Huang then bought a knife and gloves and got ready to do the job himself in June, police said. He cased Guo's place several times, raising suspicions. Witnesses said they saw Huang walking around the area with an object that looked like a knife tied to his belt.
Huang sneaked into the house but couldn't find Guo's wife, who was unharmed, police said. The would-be killer left his wallet and other evidence behind, they said.
Guo found the wallet. "At first I thought it's just failed burglary," Guo told police.
Huang was arrested and confessed, according to police.
