Ex-convicts help inmates prepare for return to society

Two former prisoners were invited back to Tilanqiao Prison in Shanghai on Wednesday to help inmates prepare for their return to society by sharing their own successful experiences.

Chen Gaoru, 47 was released from Tilanqiao in early 2012 after serving three years for disrupting public order during a fight. The pipe fitter admits he was lucky. When his former employer learned of his release, he called Chen and offered him a job.

Later in 2012, Chen jumped into the Huangpu River to save a woman who was trying to commit suicide. He was named a Just and Courageous Hero and given a 10,000 yuan (US$1,632) reward by the government.

He told the inmates that life could be hard after being released, but they would earn respect from others by being honest and hardworking.

He also reminded prisoners to learn professional skills that will help them get a job and reintegrate into society.

Sharing successful experiences is part of the prison's efforts to prepare inmates for their new lives after release, said Chen Weimin, chief of Tilanqiao’s education division.
