Ex-female soccer star has surgery to remove lump on forehead
A member of the national women’s soccer that was runner-up in the 1999 World Cup had surgery today to remove a lump on her forehead caused by heading footballs over an extended period of time.
Gao Hongxia, 41, hung up her cleats in 2005 and became a city management official in 2007.
“I took the job as a city management official in 2007 since it is near to my home,” Gao said. “There is a big difference between a football player and a city management official. I was a member of a star team and then I had to help drive away illegal stalls on the streets and help solve disputes among residents. It is a tough and troublesome job requiring patience, professional knowledge and social skills.”
Gao was recently named the industry’s only female team leader.
She found the lump years ago and doctors said it was related to heading soccer balls over a long period of time, according to doctor Xu Beihua, president of Shanghai Dream Plastic Surgery Hospital.
“We decided to offer free surgery to Gao because she contributed to Chinese soccer and did well in her new position,” Xu said.
