Exhibition reveals another side of city and its people
THE Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall is hosting a contemporary art exhibition about city and people.
The exhibit, "X City," or "The City of Unknown," explains the city's past, present and future conditions with abstract paintings, multimedia artworks and videos. The exhibition also incorporates the deep understanding of "time" and "space" of Yu Xingze, a professor with Tongji University’s College of Architecture and Urban Planning who studies arts in Germany for many years. The 800-square-meter exhibition on the second floor of the hall will run through April 5.
The exhibition aims to inspire the visitors and let them experience, think and imagine the relationship between city and its citizens, Yu said. "A city is alive with pulse and body temperature, so the exhibits also alive and can breathe," he said at the opening ceremony of his exhibition.
A centerpiece exhibit named City Rhapsody is composed of over 9,100 reflective balls in red, purple, green, blue, gold and silver. It shows that everyone is a cell of a society and a city is a combination of these cells, which change constantly and collide with each others.
An artistic installation titled Deep Breath showcases a miniature of city space with 66 small structures built by connected metallic nets. Visitors are encouraged to walk through these miniature buildings to breathe and feel the city, Yu said.
