Experts gather in city to discuss importance of intercultural harmony

Nearly 100 experts from 10 countries and regions spoke on conflict management and intercultural harmony in the past two days at the fourth biannual International Conference of International Communications held by Shanghai Normal University.

“Diversity and inclusion are processes and practices about differences for which workers and organizations as a whole make sense, frame and promote locale-specific and identity-consistent actions. If scholars assume that diversity involves conflict management as productive action to achieve intercultural harmony, then fresh insights might be attained,” said Patrice Buzzanell, former president of America's International Communication Association and current president of its Council of Communication Associations.

Guo-Ming Chen, president of International Association of Intercultural Communication Studies in America, said: “It is important for global citizens to understand, recognize and accept cultural differences, because the lack of cultural awareness and proper ways to address cultural differences in interaction will inevitably lead to unrealistic expectations, frustrations, conflicts and failure in establishing a positive relationship among people from different cultures.”

According to Pricilla Yong from Peiking University and Pan Xiaohui from Shenzhen University, it is crucial to examine the potential impact of social media on intercultural adaptation in order to better understand the role that new media plays in intercultural acculturation.
