Expo park will become commercial center after fair

THE venue for the 2010 World Expo will be turned into a major commercial center after the event concludes next October, according to a new 10-year commercial development plan for Shanghai.

The blueprint, drawn up after two years' research, also sees upgrades to the centers in New Hongqiao and the Middle Ring Road areas to make them city-level attractions, today's Oriental Morning Post reported citing officials from Shanghai Commercial Commission.

By 2020, another five regional commercial centers will be built, bring the total across the city to 17. In smaller neighborhoods, 102 commercial centers will be built.

Commercial hubs are also planned at nine suburban township-level "new cities" including Jiading, Lingang, Songjiang, Minhang, Baoshan, Nanqiao, Jinshan, Qingpu and Chengqiao districts.
