Extension built on shikumen torn down

AN illegal two-story extension built on top of a 1930s shikumen building was torn down yesterday as ordered by city law enforcement officials, to the relief of residents who feared it would cause their homes to collapse.

More than 50 housing officials, policemen and construction workers filled the narrow and usually quiet street in Longmen community on Shangwen Road yesterday morning.

The owner of the extension, a 40-year-old woman named Zhao Fengfeng, began shouting and crying, threatening to commit suicide, along with her sister, by leaping from the top of the building. Both were taken away.

A 74-year-old resident, surnamed Wang, said she now might be able to get a decent night's sleep again. "No more cracks on the walls and no more nightmares," said Wang.

An official, surnamed Zhou, with Huangpu District Housing Administration said workers would carry out renovations to the damaged building to restore its original appearance.
