Extinguishers hard to find
LOCAL residents looking to follow the advice of the authorities and invest in domestic firefighting equipment are experiencing difficulties finding these items.
Even at the Shanghai International Fire and Security Technology Equipment Exhibition, which opened yesterday, only several products were suitable for home use.
Many householders are looking to buy small fire extinguishers in the wake of last year's inferno at a residential building in Jing'an District that claimed 58 lives.
But few outlets stock these products for domestic use.
Yuan Ye, a student in the city, said there is no fire extinguisher in her home, though there is one in the communal passageway.
"But it would be difficult or impossible for us to get to that one in emergencies," said Yuan. "So even though I'm eager to buy a fire extinguisher, I don't know where to find one," she added.
Yan Shanjun, a visitor to the exhibition, said she did find some products aimed at householders, such as fire alarms and fire extinguishers at affordable prices.
"But products which people can purchase at supermarkets in Germany and Japan are not available at stores in China," added Yan.
The Shanghai Fire Control Bureau said last month that it is seeking cooperation from local supermarkets to meet demand for home firefighting equipment.
The Shanghai International Fire and Security Technology Equipment Exhibition, which features 260 exhibitors, runs until tomorrow at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.
