Ex-vice mayor sentenced to 17 years for corruption
FORMER vice mayor of Shanghai Ai Baojun was sentenced to 17 years in prison for taking bribes and embezzlement, the Intermediate People’s Court in Zhangzhou, southeast China’s Fujian Province, announced the verdict today, CCTV reported.
The court will confiscate Ai’s personal assets of 5.8 million yuan (US$840,981).
Ai, a former member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China Shanghai Municipal Committee, took advantage of various official positions to help agencies and individuals with business operations and development, among other offenses from 2000 to 2014. He was found accepting cash and properties worth more than 43 million yuan, the court heard.
Ai was also found embezzling public assets more than 7.5 million yuan from 2001 to 2009.
Ai pleaded guilty and expressed remorse.
