FTZ court given expanded role

A court handling cases related to Shanghai?s free trade zone will now also be tasked with resolving commercial disputes involving foreign companies, Pudong New Area People's Court announced earlier this week.

The court will hear both civil and criminal cases related to intellectual property rights.

In the first quarter of this year the FTZ court handled 173 cases, up 43 percent year on year. With the expansion of its mandate the court expects to handle 2,000 cases annually.

Meanwhile, Shanghai Maritime People?s Court set up its own FTZ court yesterday. Last year the maritime court accepted 119 cases related to the FTZ involving about 76.4 million yuan (US$12.3 million). No comparative figures were provided.
