Fair weather for the weekend yet smog will persist tomorrow

CITY'S smoggy condition is expected to persist tomorrow with a slight bounceback in temperatures, forecasters said.

The city had a chilly morning today with the mercury in most areas of the city falling below the freezing point. Suburban Chongming County recorded the lowest reading of -3.2 degrees Celsius, when benchmark Xujiahui weather station in downtown saw a low of -1.1 degrees. The high is forecast to be 5 degrees today.

However, a light smog formed under sunny skies due to some pollutants coming in from northern China. The air quality index climbed to up 100 starting 5am, fitting into a lightly polluted level, and kept going upwards. By noon, the AQI increased to 122, when the concentration of main pollutant PM2.5 particles hit 92 micrograms per cubic meter, nearly four times the safety guideline of 25 set by the World Health Organization.

Tomorrow the weather condition will still be similar as it would be sunny and cloudy and might be slightly smoggy as well, triggered by a firm weather. Temperatures will see a 1-degree increase with the low to be zero and the high to be 6 degrees. But in the outskirts, a low of -3 to -1 is still expected early in the morning.

Thursday a rain belt will affect the city and dump some drizzles at times with an increase in clouds. It will begin warming up starting Thursday with the mercury ranging from 3 to 7 degrees.

Skies will clear up from Friday and the weekend will enjoy a fair weather.
