Faith and love wake patients from coma
A traffic accident victim who was in a coma for eight months has fully recovered and left the Shanghai No. 3 People's Hospital today.
Fan Zhigang, a 20-year-old worker from Anhui Province, suffered serious brain and spine injuries in a road accident in December 2000. He was lying in a deep coma for eight months until last August when he woke up.
His parents are using their experiences to encourage other families to maintain faith in their relatives who are in deep coma.
"After he woke up, we conducted a surgery on his spine to repair the nerves," said Hu Yuan, a hospital official. "He then underwent rehabilitation for speech and limb movement. He is expected to live a normal life after more training exercises at home."
Another patient surnamed Song, who had been in a coma for 86 days after a traffic accident, also woke up early this year in the hospital. Apart from the efforts of doctors and nurses, Fan and his parents also contributed to his recovery.
Hu said Song's family had planned to give up the treatment after Song stayed in coma for so long. "It is Fan and his parents who urged Song's family to talk to Song and bring him to consciousness," Hu said.
Fan said he is very grateful for the hospital and all the people who helped him. He will encourage his younger sister to study medicine and he will work as a volunteer at Shanghai No. 3 People's Hospital to help other patients.
