Fake brand masks uncovered

EIGHT gangs producing and selling counterfeit brand face masks have been busted, with 900,000 masks worth 46 million yuan (US$7.48 million) seized, local police said yesterday.

The gang members sold the masks online, claiming they were made by US-based multinational 3M Co, police said.

After receiving a report from a distributor of 3M masks at the beginning of this year, police in Fengxian District uncovered more than 300 venders selling fake 3M masks on taobao.com, one of China's largest e-commerce platform.

Some were retailing for 1.4 yuan per mask - about 7 yuan lower than the usual price.

Face masks are popular among the Chinese public who use them as a protection against viruses and pollution.

Police selected seven stores and bought 30 masks from each. They sent the masks to 3M for tests. The company confirmed that they were fakes and in fact could be harmful to users as they were made of inferior materials.

On May 22, police from Shanghai and eight other provinces raided the gangs' premises and held gang members.
