Fake college website shut down

POLICE have cracked down a bogus university website that was admitting students to nonexistent Sino-foreign joint education programs.

The website, which claimed to be Shanghai University's admissions website, said it would launch programs in cooperation with educational institutions in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and Canada.

The website, shedx.520edu.com, appeared very convincing and contained Shanghai University's logos and pictures.

It also had a detailed introduction of the university, including stories on its founding and famous alumni.

Online consultation was available, with website staff answering students' questions.

"We received inquiring phone calls from parents consulting about these joint programs," said an official surnamed Liu with the university's admission office.

The university denied they had such programs and parents showed them the bogus site.

No one has reported any monetary loss to police. The site has been shut down.
