Fake iPad duo jailed for up to 5 months
THE boss and a salesman with a company that produced and sold more than 110 counterfeit iPads to a Shanghai resident yesterday received jail sentences of up to five months.
The duo also faced a fine up to 20,000 yuan (US$3,030) for selling counterfeit products, judges at Yangpu District People's Court ruled.
Last October, a local resident, surnamed Wang, bought 82 counterfeit iPads from a company in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, that produces and sells electronic goods, after contacting its salesman, surnamed Wu.
Wang signed a contract with the company owner, surnamed Ye, and paid 655 yuan for each fake Apple tablet computer - one-fifth the price of genuine ones.
Later Wang ordered another 30 of this kind of tablets, but was caught by Shanghai police after selling eight of the counterfeit iPads.
Learning of Wang's fate, Ye surrendered to police and asked Wu to confess too.
The remaining tablets were confiscated. More than 70,000 yuan was recovered.
Wu received a five-month sentence while Ye was jailed for four and a half months. Judges said they showed leniency because of their confessions. Wang was not mentioned in the verdict.
