Fake lawyer jailed for 3 years

A MAN who swindled 210,000 yuan (US$30,760) from two victims by posing as a lawyer and helping them "win" their lawsuits with faked court verdicts was sentenced to three years in jail yesterday.

Li Jixiang also received three years' reprieve and was fined 30,000 yuan by Putuo District People's Court, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Li offered to help a local resident surnamed Mu two years ago who wanted to file a lawsuit over a home relocation dispute, charging her 70,000 yuan.

He later showed Mu a document, saying it was a court verdict that she had won her case. But when she asked the court to execute the verdict in March this year, officials told her the document was faked.

Li surrendered himself to police and returned the money to Mu.

He later confessed to having cheated nearly 140,000 yuan from another victim.
