Fallen suicider injures 3

THREE passers-by were injured by a man who committed suicide by jumping off a high-rise apartment building in Shanghai's Pudong New Area on Friday night.

The 36-year-old man died at the scene after jumping from the roof of the 31-floor building in a community at the intersection of Rongcheng and Changyi roads about 8pm.

Police have determined it was suicide but have yet to establish the reason.

Among the three injured, a woman in her 20s remains in a critical condition at Shanghai East Hospital while the other two men sustained slight injuries.

According to witnesses, a father and daughter surnamed Dai were standing outside the building trying to pump up the tires of a tricycle when the accident happened.

A community security guard surnamed Ji who offered to help the father was also hit by the falling man.

"We were shocked by what was happening," said a resident in the community.

"After quite a while, we realized the subject that fell onto the passers-by was actually a human being," he said.

According to the hospital, the woman sustained internal bleeding caused by injuries to her lung, liver and spleen and remains in the intensive care unit. The father suffered bruises to his head and arm, while the security guard sustained a leg fracture.

"Why did the man choose to kill himself?" asked the father who was waiting on reports about his daughter outside the ICU yesterday.

Police said the suicide victim rented an apartment in the building.
