Family compensated over death
THE family of the dead worker in the Minhang District building collapse has accepted 775,000 yuan (US$113,469) compensation from the man's former employer.
The father of Xiao Dekun, a 21-year-old Anhui Province native who was killed when Building No. 7 toppled over at the Lotus Riverside complex on June 27, said Shanghai Meilong Aluminum Alloy Decoration Co, the company his late son had worked for, agreed to pay the compensation, Beijing Times reported.
Xiao's father signed the deal on Tuesday afternoon, the report cited a Shanghai Meilong official surnamed Wang as saying.
On June 27, Xiao went to the doomed building to collect tools about 5:30am along with four colleagues and wasn't able to escape when the building fell over. He was the only fatality.
"Xiao always worried about work deadlines, but he would never tell others," Xiao's cousin and boss told Southern Metropolis Daily.
His mother, Li Yun, told the newspaper that Xiao planned to marry in October.
Xiao's parents and other family members came to Shanghai after the 13-floor building toppled over.
Eleven family members were taken to a police station in Minhang's Meilong Town on Saturday after scuffling with four unidentified people at the toppled building's site over compensation. They were not fined or charged.
