Family of 4 killed as blaze fells home

A FAMILY of two adults and two children died yesterday when their makeshift home collapsed due to a fire, officials said.
The exact cause of their deaths is not yet known, but the Huangpu District government said via its official Weibo account that the upper four stories of a residential building collapsed after a blaze broke out about 2am.
The bodies of the victims were discovered by firefighters responding to an emergency call, it said. While none of the four were named, the children were identified as a 13-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy. No one else was hurt in the incident.
The family home was a flat inside an illegal four-story extension to a two-story property on Dongjie Street, the microblog post said.
Meanwhile, police said yesterday that the owner of the property has been detained.
A neighbor was quoted by thepaper.cn as saying that the extra stories were built about four years ago.
The government said that in the aftermath of the incident, supports have been added to several adjacent buildings and some residents have been evacuated pending safety checks.
