Farmer jailed for online pyramid scheme
A SHANGHAI farmer has been jailed for six months for running an online pyramid sale scheme, the first detected in the city.
Chen Xiting, 56, managed to collect more than 200,000 yuan (US$29,301) from more than 200 Internet users, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.
He was also fined 20,000 yuan, the newspaper said.
Chen launched a Website in April promoting an online game that he boasted was popular worldwide. In the game, players were asked to send 1,000 yuan to three beneficiaries' accounts appointed by the Website and develop more lower-level participants. They were expected to get 37,600 yuan in return.
Chen had set up a service center at an illegal Net cafe to attract more players. He claimed the game's profits would go to charity.
