Fashion industry zone to crop up in Changning District

SHANGHAI plans to create a fashion industry zone around Donghua University, formerly China Textile University, officials disclosed at a forum during the ongoing Shanghai Fashion Week.

The zone will cover 14.74 square kilometers of land in the western Changning District.

Fashion design studios will concentrate in the zone to capitalize on the university's rich resources. Graduates will be encouraged to set up their own businesses near the campus.

Donghua University will become the second university in Shanghai to be surrounded by related enterprises after Tongji University which has a cluster of architectural firms in the vicinity.

Donghua University will team up with world-famous design academies to create an international fashion research center.

The fashion industry zone will have 500,000 square meters of buildings to house fashion companies and expects to see its total revenue growing 17 percent a year to hit 200 billion yuan (US$317 billion) in 2015.
