Faster Internet in store for city

THE city plans to strengthen efforts to introduce fiber-optic cables citywide to boost Internet speed, and also will offer incentives starting next month to attract users to register into the network.

As part of the initiative, users whose current household Internet speed is 2 megabits per second, for example, will see their broadband speed doubled to 4mbps without extra charge during the transitional period to complete the new network, a China Telecom manager said.

Gradually as the whole service platform improves locally, users can expect to enjoy lightening-fast broadband speeds of up to 100mbps at home, enabling smooth uploading and downloading of videos and better live video conferencing, among other benefits.

Telecommunication service providers said yesterday that the new customer incentives are needed because many are reluctant to accept faster broadband.

Some fear the new service is too pricey or unstable, company managers said.

Officials encouraged locals to contact their Internet service providers about incentives, which depend on locality of their households.

By the end of 2012, the number of new fiber-optic Internet-facilitated homes will be boosted to 5.5 million.
