Fatal accidents

A 24-year-old intern nurse was killed due to a malfunctioning elevator in a hospital in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, last week. Her head was trapped as the elevator descended quickly, leading to her death.

In January, the unclosed door of an elevator shaft led to the death of a 21-year-old woman in Shanghai. The elevator maintenance worker illegally shortened the car's interlock circuit, causing the shaft door to stay open even when the elevator was in motion.

Last September, a woman died after she fell six floors down an elevator shaft in a shopping mall on Nanjing Road E. Investigation found repairmen who removed a warning sign from the door of the elevator were responsible.
