Fatal hit-and-run driver surrenders after 10 years

A DRIVER who killed an elderly pedestrian in a crash has surrendered himself to Shanghai traffic police, ending 10 years on the run.

The driver, surnamed Wang, is on bail, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.

His conscience drove him to face the music because he couldn't bear the pain of the guilt any more, the newspaper said. He also missed his son, who was just seven years old when he left town.

Wang was driving a truck loaded with building material on a rainy night in July 1999 when he hit a pedestrian at the junction of Guangzhong Road and Dalian Road W.

Wang had one of his employees send the victim to a nearby hospital and decided to flee after learning of his death.
