Female college student killed, 3 injured in dump truck crash
A FEMALE college student was killed and two of her roommates and a taxi driver seriously injured when a dump truck ran a red light and plowed into the side of the Chery cab they were in at 10:36am on Sunday in suburban Jiading District.
The driver of the unauthorized or "black" cab was left in a coma. No details were released on the other two students.
The three women, freshmen at Tianhua College of Shanghai Normal University, had planned to pass the day downtown, according to a teacher. The three students were not from Shanghai and lived on campus.
College students have complained about their lack of transportation options near the suburban campus on Shengxin Road N. Buses come only once every 20 to 30 minutes to take them to the nearest Metro station, West Jiading Station of Line 11, which is 1.5 kilometers away.
While few legal taxis are found outside the campus, illegal cabs often park at the school gate.
"We don't want to choose the black cabs, but sometimes the buses don't come for half an hour," a student said. "In the end, we have to take the black cabs."
There are about 6,000 students living in Tianhua College and the population in the area is estimated at 10,000, not including those who work there.
Students at three universities in Lingang New Town of the Pudong New Area have a similar problem. On Sunday afternoons, as they are returning to campus, they can be seen lining up and waiting for hours outside of the Longyang Road Station of Metro Line 2 for the bus to Lingang. Authorities said the situation should be improved this year when Metro Line 16, connecting Lingang to the Longyang Road Station of Line 2, opens this year.
