Filipino thief ring gets prison

FIVE transvestite prostitutes from the Philippines, who lured expatriate men from bars with promises of sex and then drugged and robbed them, were sentenced to nine to 13 years in jail yesterday.

After serving the sentence in Shanghai, the Filipinos will be expelled from China permanently, said the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court.

The five, some dressed in feminine attire, didn't lodge an appeal.

Prosecutors said the men stole property valued at more than 150,000 yuan (US$21,961) from three victims from December 2008 to February 2009, after plying them with chocolates laced with sedatives.

"Usually the suspects who steal property valued at more than 20,000 yuan will be sentenced for more than 10 years in jail," said Gu Pingzhou, a judge with the court.

According to prosecutors, the five came to Shanghai early last year to make money from sexual services.

They stole credit cards and a Rolex watch, using the cards to buy perfume, gold and clothes worth more than US$11,600, prosecutors said.
