Film studio collapse hurts 21

THE second floor of a movie studio collapsed during a film shoot in a suburban area of the city yesterday afternoon, injuring more than 20 people.

Most of the injured were background actors and actresses, who were shooting a historical movie in the Image Maker Corp Ltd in Songjiang District.

Four people suffered bone fractures and others suffered bruises and other light injuries.

The two-floor high studio collapsed about 2:20pm when about 150 staff members were on the second floor. They were shooting a scene that had the actors jumping and cheering. Sags suddenly appeared in the wooden floor and the frightened staff ran, which caused the collapse of the whole studio. Beams and other objects on the ceiling all fell down.

Twenty-one injured people wearing costumes were rushed to the Songjiang District Central Hospital for treatment. All were reported in stable condition last night.

The film studio was set up in 1999, and many movies have been shot there, including the kung fu movie Ip Man.

The company denied accusations that the studio is dilapidated, saying staff keep regular maintenance of it.

It said the collapse was caused by too many people standing on the floor.
