Fire Death Warning
ELEVEN people were killed in fires last month, four more than in the same month in 2007, Zhou Meiliang, media coordinator with the Shanghai Fire Control Bureau, said yesterday.
Most of the fatal blazes were caused by gas leaks, old electric wiring and cigarettes left unattended, the bureau said. It said more than 40 percent of fire accidents last year to October involved household or commercial electrical appliances.
The fire authority reminded students and the elderly to take extra care when using electric household appliances during the upcoming Spring Festival.
The fire bureau said old brick-and-wood residential houses, restaurants, storage facilities, production plants and large shopping malls were all places where fires caught easily.
