Fire assistants start patrolling
FIREFIGHTING assistants - a newly created post in the city - have begun duty in the wake of last year's inferno that claimed 58 lives, local authorities said yesterday.
The addition of the new jobs are among the latest moves to improve safety in Shanghai. Firefighting assistants are assigned to patrol around communities to look for hidden fire risks and report them to management bodies.
Li Huijing, an officer with the Shanghai Fire Control Bureau, said that along with the firefighting assistants, volunteers composed of local residents and students will also help to improve Shanghai's fire-prevention network.
The officer also revealed to Shanghai Daily that people will be able to purchase firefighting equipment at supermarkets, mainly those belonging to the Bailian Group, in the near future.
After the deadly blaze that engulfed a high-rise residential building on November 15, 2010, more and more local residents want to buy the equipment to protect themselves in case of emergency.
"And we encourage people to prepare fire extinguishers, fire alarms, and breath masks at home," Li said.
