Fire destroys 2 city apartments

A FIRE broke out in a six-story residential building yesterday afternoon, destroying two apartments and injuring three people.
The blaze was reported at 12:40pm in apartment 504 on the fifth floor of Building No. 1 in 255 Pingxingguan Road, Zhabei District. Five fire engines rushed to the scene and the fire was put out in 30 minutes. The cause of the blaze is still?unclear.
The fire was first noticed when a male tenant was seen running out of the building with his child in the arms, according to neighbors.
Witnesses said residents escaped from the building soon after the fire broke out, which engulfed the apartment and soon spread to apartment 604 on the floor above.
Some people remained inside to extinguish the fire, witnesses said. However, the blaze was soon out of control and smoke filled the entire sixth floor, trapping three residents there.
But thanks to the fast action of firefighters, the three residents were rescued.
All three had suffered from smoke?inhalation and were taken to hospital. Their conditions were reported to be stable yesterday afternoon.
