Fire sweeps through roof of air terminal building

A FIRE swept through the top of the city air terminal building yesterday in downtown Jing'an District.

There were no reports of casualties.

The building, which is close to Jing'an Temple, provides check-in services for the city's airports, but also includes offices and cafes.

It's believed a condensing tower, which was being repaired, on the roof of the 12-floor building first caught fire about 1:20pm on Nanjing Road W. It was put out at 1:30pm, the city's fire department said.

Workers were welding on the roof, a witness said. The smoke from the blaze could be seen kilometers away.

Explosive gas cylinders were spotted at the scene.

Several welders were taken by city police for questioning.

Traffic on Nanjing Road was blocked for a short time as firefighters battled the blaze. Shuttle buses to the airports were not delayed, authorities said.
