Fire-disfigured boy goes to school after surgery

A seven-year-old Shanghai boy who was disfigured in a fire accident three years ago finally went to school after plastic surgeries changed him from a "litter monster" to a boy with a normal appearance.

Zhang Hao received five surgeries to separate his fingers which grew together after healing from a severe burn. The boy can now use his fingers to hold a pencil.

Doctors at the Shanghai Huamei Plastic Surgery Hospital said they will offer further treatment to improve his finger functions.

The boy suffered severe burns in the face and hands when his home in suburban Jinshan District caught fire in 2009. He underwent many surgeries to remove scars and transplant hair and eyebrows.

The Shanghai Charity Foundation said yesterday it established a special account for Zhang to get medical treatment and has received more than 190,000 yuan in donations.

"I am happy I can go to school every day like others," the boy said.
