Firefly park opening postponed indefinitely
A controversial firefly park has had its opening day postponed indefinitely due to severe safety hazards, police in Songjiang District said today.
The park was originally scheduled to open tomorrow. The park’s operator, Wuhan Junyou Business Management Co Ltd, had been claiming that visitors would be able to see tens of thousands of fireflies at night.
A Wuhan Junyou employee surnamed said the company is making improvements to the park based on the order of authorities and that it still plans to open the park.
Tu added that ticket sales had been suspended.
More than 2,600 tickets had been booked online following social media promotions, but Tu declined to say whether refunds would be provided.
One ticket costs 80 yuan (US$12.9) although they were being sold online for 69 yuan.
Experts and environmental groups had criticized the park, questioning whether the fireflies were caught in the wild.
Catching wild fireflies will threaten the ecosystem and probably lead to species invasion in the places where they are displayed, experts warned.
