Firemen ready for fast Expo response

FIRE engines will be able to reach any blaze inside the World Expo site within three minutes, two minutes faster than the city's average, according to fire control officials.
Five permanent fire stations, four temporary ones and a fire control port will be set up around the 5.28-square-kilometer Expo site. They will be able to spot a fire within a minute and send firemen to the scene within three minutes during the six-month event, Shanghai Fire Control Bureau said today.
A new amphibian fire control station at the Expo site, also the first in the city, will be put into use in March. Linyi station, a permanent one at the Pudong section near Nanpu Bridge, is designed to serve both the Expo and the Huangpu River's fire control. A port to berth fire-fighting boats is also built inside Linyi station.
About 60 percent of the construction of the Expo fire control buildings has completed, and the rest will be ready in April, according to an official surnamed Zhou with the bureau.
Qian Bin, an official with the fire control bureau, said Shanghai will have 120 fire stations across the city before May 1, the opening day of the World Expo. In the past six years, 42 stations have been set up with an investment of nearly 1 billion yuan (US$146 million) from the city government.
