Fires up by 20%

THE city reported 548 fires in November, a 20 percent rise on the same period last year, the Shanghai Fire Control Bureau said yesterday. These included the inferno that engulfed a high-rise building in Jing'an District and claimed 58 lives. The increase was partly attributed to lax management and supervision after the World Expo.
