First foundation in mainland launched to help children in need of kidney transports
THE first foundation on mainland giving donation and help for poor children needing kidney transplants was set up by Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation and Zhongshan Hospital over the weekend.
The foundation is named Kidnewer—a combination of Kid, Kidney and New in an effort to give sick children a new life, officials said.
There are 2 million people with uremia in the nation and every year’s new patients are rising by 20 percent annually. In Shanghai, there are 30 new uremia children needing dialysis or kidney transplant every year, experts said.
Due to the surgery difficulty, high risk and the difference of anti-rejection medication between adults and children, China lags behind in pediatric kidney transplant. There are 700 to 800 children’s kidney transplant cases in the United States every year, while it is only 100 surgeries in the nation, experts said.
To support poor children’s transplant and the research of pediatric kidney transplant in the nation, the Soong Ching Ling foundation and Zhongshan hospital teamed up to establish the foundation to give support to sick children, their family and encourage clinical development of pediatric kidney transplant.
