First renovation in two decades starts on city's century-old cathedral

THE century-old Xujiahui Cathedral will be under renovation through next August to restore its historic look as one of the city's most iconic buildings, the district government said.
Renovation had kicked off last Monday and would last till August 17 with the cathedral being closed for the project, an official with the government told Shanghai Daily.
Formerly known as Saint Ignatius Cathedral, it was once the largest cathedral in the Far East.
Xujiahui Cathedral was designed by a British architect and built by French businessmen. Construction began in 1906 and was completed in October 1910.
The renovation work included fixing a leaky roof, repairing damages caused by wind abrasion while broken tiles and wooden floors damaged by termite bites in the Gothic structure would also be replaced.
“The cathedral had been leaky and parts of its structures frequently came off, frightening both prayers and visitors," the cathedral management said in a statement. It had been closed since August 24 for safety concerns.
The cathedral was last renovated in 1991.
