First-time air traveler opens plane slide, faces damage bill
A young man is now facing a hefty bill for his first-ever air journey after he accidentally deployed a plane's emergency slide after landing in the Guangzhou Baiyun Airport last week, Southern Metropolis Daily reported.
It's believed that the man, who was on his first-ever air trip, triggered the slide in a rush to go home last Friday evening. The plane had been waiting on the field for about 1.5 hours by then amid an air traffic control when the emergency took place.
The crew said they had not locked up the slide opening function yet when the passenger pressed the button in bid to leave the plane. The slide subsequently fully opened. Unprepared opening of emergency slides risk safety of passengers on board, the crew said.
The passenger's mistake reportedly cost the company tens of thousands of yuan in losses resulted from restoring the facilities and it also caused delays to upcoming flights scheduled.
The company is now demanding a penalty compensation of 27,000 yuan (US$ 4,325)from the passenger, who was reportedly taken away by police for questioning after the incident.
