Five held over bank card fraud
FIVE people were arrested for alleged credit card fraud after installing illegal card readers and cameras on ATMs across Shanghai to steal the victims' banking details, police said yesterday.
The suspects allegedly stole passwords from about 230 bank cards and later forged cards with the stolen information to milk 800,000 yuan (US$118,134) from accounts, police said.
They said banks and police had recovered 300,000 yuan, but the rest had been squandered.
Police reminded people to be careful while using ATMs and appealed to banks to intensify checks on their machines.
"The illegal card readers were stuck on with glue and looked unnatural, while the genuine one should be integrated with the machine and feel smooth," said Gong Hongyi, a Pudong New Area police officer who took part in cracking the case.
People should cover their hands while typing in the password to prevent any illegal cameras discovering their identity numbers, Gong said.
