Flooded runways cause flight delays at city's airports
Thousands of passengers were stranded at Hongqiao International Airport this morning after scores of flights were delayed due to flooded runways.
More than 4,000 passengers were waiting in the terminal building as of noon since their flights couldn't depart.
Flight crew had to walk on tables from the terminal building to board aircraft. Some passengers from Metro Line 10's Hongqiao Terminal 1 Station took off their shoes to wade through deep water to reach the terminal building.
Some 110 flights had been delayed at Hongqiao and another 80 delayed at Pudong international airport around noon. More than 40 flights were canceled at both airports.
The air traffic controller issued a rainstorm alert at both airports. It anticipated departures to be reduced by 60 percent at Hongqiao and 30 percent at Pudong International Airport.
China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines started sending text messages to passengers with updated flight information, they told Shanghai Daily.
