Folk artists look to iPhone for modern connection

TRADITIONAL Jinshan farmer painting is to get a modern makeover and feature on iPhone covers.

Organizers hope the initiative will give a boost to the folk art form, which is designated as a well-known city-level intangible cultural heritage item.

The covers, produced by the Jinshan Farmer Painting Academy, go on sale next month for less than 50 yuan (US$7.9).

Zhu Xi, deputy head of the academy, said the first covers will feature the works of four renowned painters.

Jinshan farmer painting, a tradition in the city's coastal south end, is renowned for its bright depictions of rural life.

It has struggled due to changing tastes and counterfeits.

Members of the public welcomed the iPhone initiative.

"It's good to have our own cultural elements shown on electronic devices," said a iPhone user surnamed Xu.
