Food that's good to go
RESTAURANTS will begin offering box meals on about 50 mobile carts when attendance exceeds 550,000 people to give visitors more time to visit pavilions, an Expo official said yesterday.
Each cart will have less than 50 meals, with the price about 20 yuan per meal, said Yu, a senior official of the site's commercial administration and service department.
The organizer will enhance food supervision from today to ensure food safety in hot weather. Large amounts of boxed meals or food brought by visitors or pavilion employees will be confiscated at entrances starting today.
The box-meal price was set to match those being sold outside the Expo site in an effort to dissuade visitors from bringing homemade food, the official said.
The carts will be specially designed to keep the food hot, she said.
The organizer will not sell the box meals on mobile carts when attendance is less than 550,000 to avoid denting business in restaurants, Yu said.
The organizer will choose the restaurants with bad business to make the box meals.
The city's food safety authority will supervise the food-making process and all box meals must be sold within two hours.
Each cart will have a certificate of authenticity to distinguish them from those selling unauthorized box meals.
Some pavilions that have failed to attract decent business to its restaurants were found selling box meals, ordered from outside the site.
Attendance is expected to rise this month and next as students are on summer vacation.
More than 550,000 people visited the Expo on both June 15 and 27.
