Foreign fare dodger caught, fined after jumping over turnstile at downtown Metro station

A foreign passenger, whose nationality and identity were not identified, was caught jumping over a turnstile to enter Changshou Road Station of Metro Line 7 Saturday night, the Metro operator said Tuesday.

Pixelated photos of the passenger was posted on the Metro operator's Weibo.

The fare dodger was caught by Zheng Liping, a traffic law enforcement official with the Metro operator, and was fined 84 yuan (US$13) for violating the city's railway transportation regulations.

As the passenger claimed that he did not have any cash with him then, he was allowed to call a friend to come to the station and pay the fine for him, Metro operator said.

Under current rules, those who get caught trying to dodge metro fare would not only need to pay 14-yuan, the highest rate of local Metro fare, but also face a fine of up to 5 times of the maximum charge of a Metro ticket.

The Metro operator said last month that it was considering to name and shame fare dodgers on its Weibo account, though the proposal was not elaborated.
