Foreign woman ducking under Metro turnstile to get through caught, fined

A foreign woman who was caught ducking under a turnstile to leave a Metro station was fined by Metro operator for "dodging fares”, the Metro authority said today.

A station security footage clip, exposed by Metro authority, showed the blond lowered her body to get through the turnstile without using a ticket card yesterday afternoon at downtown Shaanxi Road S Station of Line 1. She bumped into a team of law enforcers on patrol outside the station after getting out.

She was fined 84 yuan for her act deemed "fare dodging". Through translation help offered by another woman who spoke both Chinese and English, she explained to the Metro authority she had lost her ticket during the ride.

But the law enforcers told her through the translator that she should have sought help from the staffers at the information center in that case instead of ducking under the turnstile to get out, which is against the Metro regulation.

The fine she had paid is six times the maximum price of a Metro single trip.
