Foreigner accused of rape at 'job interview'

A FOREIGNER accused of molesting a Chinese woman in a downtown apartment on Wednesday has been detained, police said yesterday.

Police did not disclose the identity of the suspect, but sources said the man is an Indian whose name is "Deepak."

Police responded after the victim, a woman in her early 20s, reported on Wednesday about 5pm that she had been molested by a foreigner at the Park View Court Service Apartment, or Dijingyuan in Chinese, on Zhaojiabang Road.

Police detained the suspect after taking him to a police station for questioning, police said.

The woman told police she was trying to find a job and put her personal information on the Internet.

She was then contacted by a man who asked her to do a job interview, she said.

The two agreed to meet at the man's residence on Wednesday, police said.

The woman said she fainted after consuming some soft drink offered by the suspect. The woman called police, she said, when she realized she had been molested.

The suspect rented the apartment last year, a security guard with the complex told the local Oriental Morning Post.

The guard described the suspect as tall, over 1.8 meters, with dark skin and big eyes. He often greets people and lives on the 20th floor, the guard said.

The guard said a few young women have been to the suspect's place for job interviews late last year. Once a woman fled from the apartment, saying she did not take the drink offered to her. "Similar things happened before," said the guard, who declined to be named.
