Foreigner held for locker theft
POLICE in Pudong have detained a Tanzanian national for stealing from locker rooms at local fitness centers.
The suspect, surnamed Assey, also has a previous history in the city after it turned out that he was arrested earlier for procuring sex in Jing'an District.
Assey had stolen at least two cell phones and several thousand yuan in cash from closets at two fitness centers in Pudong last month. The total value of stolen goods and cash is estimated at 10,000 yuan but police believe that it could be higher as not all the victims had reported the theft.
The first complaint was made on April 21 when a member of a fitness center in Yangjing Area said that his closet was broken into and thousands of yuan in cash was missing.
After checking the fingerprint, police got hold of Assey.
"We checked his fingerprint and found that he had already been caught before on other charges," an officer surnamed Wang told Shanghai Daily.
During interrogation, Assey also admitted stealing from a fitness center near the Yuanshen Sports Center in Pudong on April 18.
Surprisingly, Assey did not have memberships for either of the centers, but just casually walked in.
Neither did he have any special skills in unlocking the lockers but simply yanked them, police said.
