Foreigner makes great escape as big tree falls

A FOREIGNER had a lucky escape at the weekend.

The foreign man was driving a moped as a large elm tree fell over on Anhua Road in Changning District, but he accelerated just enough to get under the tree before getting crushed, a witness said.

"I gestured toward the foreigner that he was great, and he returned the gesture," said the witness surnamed Zhao.

Three parked vehicles, including a BMW, were not as fortunate. The tree landed on and damaged them.

Traffic was also blocked on the road until emergency workers sawed the tree into pieces and removed them.

Zhao said he first heard a cracking sound and thought it was an iron railing that had broken as the tree was leaning on it.

A local greenery bureau said after an initial check that the tree's roots had rotted, which caused it to fall over.

The bureau added that strong wind may also have been a factor in the incident.

It also said the 90-year-old tree had not been trimmed in the past few years, placing an additional burden on its roots.
