Former media group boss gets 4 years in blackmailing scandal
SHEN Hao, ex-president of 21st Century Media Ltd, was sentenced to four years and fined 60,000 yuan (US$9,264) for involvement in the group’s extortion scandal, according to verdict by a Shanghai court on Thursday.
According to Shanghai police, nearly 30 executives, editors and reporters from the group were handed over to prosecutors after the group’s operating companies and news products were found to use their influence to extort money from companies in return for favorable coverage and quashing negative reports.
Shen, 43, was charged with blackmail, forced transactions and duty encroachment by Pudong New Area People’s Court.
He was given a lighter sentence as he confessed crimes and was cooperative during investigation, the court said.
Former vice president Le Bing was sentenced to two years with a two-year reprieve for duty encroachment.
The trial is continuing.
