From sporting to studying
YAO is not the first Chinese sports star who has encountered difficulties making the transition to studying.
In 2009, five athletes - including former table tennis world champion Liu Guozheng - quit university after failing to meet course requirements.
And Yao's fellow student at Jiao Tong University, snooker star Ding Junhui, has been studying for seven years but does not seem to have amassed enough credits to graduate.
But former table tennis queen Deng Yaping has proved as formidable in academia as in sport. The four-time Olympic gold medalist gained a bachelor's degree from Tsinghua University, and in Britain, a master's from the University of Nottingham and a PhD in land economy at the University of Cambridge.
