G20 trade ministers meet in Shanghai

G20 trade ministers gather in Shanghai today to discuss solutions to trade issues and ways to promote investment cooperation. 

Construction of a G20 trade and investment mechanism, supporting the multilateral trading system, boosting global trade growth, and promoting global investment policy cooperation and coordination will be at the center of the agenda of the two-day meeting. 

“The meeting is taking place at a critical time when the global economy is in a profound adjustment,” said Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng, who chairs the meeting, “ Economic recovery remains sluggish, trade growth is weak, investment is yet to recover to the level before financial crisis and financial market is suffering from turmoils and increasing market uncertainties.”

“The meeting offers an platform for global major economies to address key issues facing global growth,” Gao said. 

The meeting is held in advance of the G20 Hangzhou Summit, which is slated for September 4 and 5. The G20 countries account for 80 percent of world trade and 85 percent of global economy.
